I had two minidisc players (at different times). Absolutely loved them. Brilliant little machines.

Cornish: I'm not really a techie so don't know the ins and outs. At home its the Naim Unity and Neat speakers. About 6 years old and very pleased with the quality. I have all sorts of CDs but mainly listen to opera and go for the best quality CDs/Blurays I can get. In the car, the system is Bower & Wilkinson. The Unity also plays streams. Maybe my ears getting old but I'm sure nothing yet rivals CD quality. The only time I don't care about quality is on vinyl when great to get warts and all of a particular performance.

CDs are over. Get with the times. You want to get yourself a good minidisc player.

Weird isn't it, Looks as though vinyl is going to outlive CD as well as cassettes.

Cornish. The most important bit of kit is the speaks. A good pair of speakers make most things sound great.

A Naim Unity aint just any old CD player and as you say his £200 may just cover the deposit. I have a Yamaha CD player cost around £200, rarely use it and Spotify sounds much better on my Network Receiver which is a Yamaha RN-602. I wouild love to be able to borrow some hi end kit for a day just to see if the outlay is worth it. I can tell the difference between my Yamaha and other kit I have owned, but would love to check out expensive kit against mine.

Human. Well it would depend on the phone, the system ins and outs and the music style you are playing. I had an android which was by far the worst music player I've ever had where as the iphone is quiet but decent quality. A car is a very bad place to judge these things anyway BUT I do understand that the experience is all. Just dont blame it on the files most now days are as good as wavs.

only wine and I was useless at that.
Its obvious though if I'm in the car and I play through the phone or the same music on a CD, its different class. I don't know much about spotify. I have reduced to a fairly narrow base of music over the years and tend to buy CDs/Blurays of the versions I want.

Stain. Have you ever done a blind test? I was in a £500,000 mastering studio and tested Spotify against the wav master and it was impossible to tell the difference.

I looked into this around 5 years ago. Things may have changed since but then the streaming quality was nothing like what one can get from CD's. I do use high quality streaming for portable devices (basic iTunes being hopeless) I went for something called a Naim Unity which has been excellent and does all the streaming etc as well but at its heart is a cd player. Having seen your budget I'm afraid you wont get close so not terribly helpful but has allowed me to talk about my purchase. DVD players are also something I feel one should pay good money for. I mainly listen to/watch opera and you can't get the quality on a £100 DVD player.

£200 is going to get you a budget machine from the likes of Denon, Martantz and Yamaha. Push it to closer to £300 you will get a better player from the same marques.

If you want the best of all worlds, can save all your cd's, dont need a computer etc.. Plays internet radio as well.
Kind of expensive, however, I kind of like unique 1 off things by quirky British inventors...
